Research Areas of Interest
Cognitive Neuroscience
The most complex system we are challenged with trying to understand is the human brain
and the experience of consciousness. Cognitive neuroscience is the marriage of two complementary
and synergistic fields of study that rise to meet the challenge:
cognitive science and neuroscience. By combining the perspectives used in studying the mind
and the brain, we are in a better position to unravel the mysteries of consciousness. Of
particular interest are the topics that will help in the advancement of research and education
itself: attention, learning, and memory. Other topics of interest include the role of emotion in
cognitive functions, eletrophysiology, and neurocardiology.
Psychoneuroimmunology and Psychoneuroendocrinology
These emerging field are at the forefront of medical science, studying the interrelation of
consciousness with the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems. They hold the promise of
a scientific understanding for the mechanisms of action for many ancient mind-body practices,
as well as shedding new light on the role of sleep and emotions in health and longevity.
Neuropsychopharmacology
Over the last decades, powerful pharmaceutical therapies
for several psychiatric conditions have been developed. It is our hope that with the
insights gained from the exploding field of cognitive neuroscience and the continual development
of pharmaceutical science and technology, we will be able to develop more sophisticated and
refined therapeutics for treating mental illness, optimizing cognitive faculties, and improving
the quality of life.
Ethnopharmacology
Combining the approaches of medical anthropology, phytotherapy, and pharmaceutical science,
this discipline examines medicinal plants in indigenous cultures, their bioactive compounds,
and the sustainable development and production of nature-derived therapeutics.
Bioelectromagnetism, Electromagnetic Therapy and Bioelectric Engineering
We are interested in exploring the role of electromagnetic effects in biological systems.
Topics of promising potential include elucidating mechanisms of action for ancient
energy therapies, developing new bioelectromagnetic-based therapies and diagnostic tools,
and advancing the fields of neurocardiology and biofeedback.
Biofeedback
Biofeedback is the practice of providing the body with information on its autonomic processes
with the purpose of developing the ability to affect them. In this regard, biofeedback is proving
to be an effective tool for maintaining and restoring balance in several health conditions.
Health Education
We seek to explore health education as a form of preventive medicine, empowering the public with
information to help them develop and maintain vibrant health and well-being. Of special interest
is the use of information technology and online communication.
Medical Research Methodology
We are exploring a meta-research focus on information technology for online communication and
collaboration systems that will faciliate the development of interdisciplinary research networks
and distributed data-sharing methods across laboratories in the area of integrative medicine.
